The rhythmic beat of drums and the energetic chants filled the streets of Kagurazaka on July 28th and 29th as the Awa Odori dance festival returned as part of the vibrant Kagurazaka Matsuri. This year, twenty “ren” (dance teams), including the local favorite Kagura-ren, participated in the lively celebration.
Originating in 1972, the Kagurazaka Awa Odori has become a beloved summer tradition in the district. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival was put on hold for a few years. However, much to the delight of locals and visitors alike, the Awa Odori resumed in 2023 and continues to enchant audiences with its unique charm.
One of the highlights of the Kagurazaka Awa Odori is the opportunity for the general public to join in the fun. After 8:30 PM, the streets open up for anyone who wants to try their hand (or feet!) at the Awa Odori dance, creating a truly inclusive and festive atmosphere.
While the Kagurazaka Awa Odori is a vibrant event in its own right, Tokyo’s Awa Odori scene doesn’t end there. Just around the corner, the Koenji Awa Odori, a much larger festival, is set to take place on August 24th and 25th. Celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, the Koenji Awa Odori boasts over 150 participating dance teams and attracts nearly a million spectators.
Whether you catch the spirited performances at the Kagurazaka Awa Odori or immerse yourself in the grand spectacle of the Koenji Awa Odori, Tokyo’s Awa Odori festivals promise an unforgettable experience of Japanese summer culture and tradition.
