Tokyo Welcomes the World’s Athletic Elite for a Historic Championship

TOKYO – The eyes of the athletics world have turned to Tokyo as the city hosts the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, a landmark event marking the return of the global competition to the Japanese capital after a 34-year absence. The last time Tokyo held the championships was in 1991, and now, from September 13 to September 21, 2025, the city is once again the stage for track and field’s greatest stars.

The main venue for the championship is the state-of-the-art Japan National Stadium, a modern marvel built on the very site of the former National Stadium, which hosted the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. This new stadium, a central pillar of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, now welcomes athletes and fans to witness another chapter in sporting history.

  • Faith Kipyegon (Kenya): A dominant figure in middle-distance running, Kipyegon is a three-time Olympic champion and multiple-time world champion in the 1500m. She is also a world record holder in the 1500m and the mile.
  • Yaroslava Mahuchikh (Ukraine): The undisputed queen of the high jump, Mahuchikh is a world and Olympic champion and the world record holder in her event.
