Odaiba’s Giant Gundam: A New Era for a Tokyo Icon

Odaiba Gundam

Towering over Odaiba’s DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, the life-sized Gundam statue has been a must-see attraction for anime fans and pop culture enthusiasts since its debut in 2012. But this iconic landmark has undergone a transformation, ushering in a new era for Gundam in Tokyo.

The original Gundam, a towering replica of the RX-78-2 Gundam from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, stood guard over Odaiba for five years. It was a beloved symbol of the area, drawing crowds with its impressive size and intricate details.

In 2017, the original Gundam was retired, making way for a new generation. The RX-0 Unicorn Gundam, from the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series, now stands proudly in its place. This newer, even larger Gundam boasts impressive features, including the ability to transform between Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode, with light shows and special effects adding to its awe-inspiring presence.

And when you’re done marveling at the Gundam, step into the Gundam Cafe located within DiverCity Tokyo Plaza. This themed cafe offers a unique dining experience for fans, with Gundam-inspired food, drinks, and merchandise. It’s the perfect place to refuel and immerse yourself in the world of Gundam.

Whether you’re a longtime Gundam fan or simply curious about this unique piece of Tokyo’s pop culture landscape, the life-sized Gundam at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza is a must-visit. It’s a testament to the enduring popularity of the Gundam franchise and a symbol of Japan’s innovative spirit.
